Purpose:

Everywhere Means Something to Someone – the People’s Guidebook to Romney Marsh

Romney Marsh is an important historic area and the people’s guidebook will share local residents knowledge about the lesser known areas of the Romney Marsh that are mostly held in the memories of local people. We will capture often previously unheard memories and stories by talking to as many people as possible and having conversations across the area in towns and villages that make up the Romney Marsh. We intend to present reasons for people to seek out unexpected and potentially new destinations across the Romney Marsh, giving visitors to the area a new reason to explore different parts of the Romney Marsh. We are currently fundraising to enable to design and printing to the book with colour photographs to preserve and share this information with a wider group of residents and visitors.

Decision:

To provide funding of £520 to the above project.

Reason for decision:

We have had a number of conversations with residents, community groups and active – organisations on the Romney Marsh with very positive responses, including:

- The Romney Marsh Partnership and Fifth Continent

- Magnox

- Art in the Romney Marsh

- JAM on the Marsh.

- Folkestone and Hythe District Council - ‘Health and Wellbeing on Romney Marsh’ forum.

- Staff at the Marsh Academy Secondary School.

All of these organisations have agreed that this project would fit well with their own aims, and would be a good conduit between their various objectives. The content of the Guidebook has the potential to create links, both geographic terms and between the varying objectives of individual local groups.
