CARM (Caring All Together on Romney Marsh)

Decision Maker: Ward Member for Walland and Dengemarsh (1)

Decision status: Recommendations Approved

Is Key decision?: No

Is subject to call in?: No

Purpose:

Lydd Christmas Dinner - Lydd Meeting Point will be having their Christmas Dinner at Hardy Hall in Lydd. This will enable all those who attend to enjoy a Christmas Dinner with others. Some of our attendees will be spending Christmas alone this year so this meal is very important to alleviate loneliness and isolation levels amongst our older and elderly members.

Decision:

CARM has been running since 1987, when we originally only provided Meeting Points, in order to provide friendship to older and elderly people who were lonely or isolated on Romney Marsh. Since then, we have expanded our services, but our Meeting Points continue to be an essential part of our work, as levels of loneliness are worsened with a lack of public transport, and as more families have to move away from the Marsh to find work, meaning family ties are broken.

Loneliness is recognised as a national and growing problem which we are working to alleviate. In Lydd, the problem of loneliness is exacerbated by higher levels of depravation, as evidenced by national statistics and food bank use locally, meaning that community meals provided at little to no cost are really important.
