Small society lotteries licence applications

If you wish to run a small lottery such as a raffle for a non-commercial society, you need to register it with us.

Non-commercial society

Your society must be run:

  • for charitable purposes;
  • to help people take part in, or to support, sports or cultural activities; or,
  • for non-commercial purposes and not for private gain.

Some types of lottery are exempt from registration, for example those held at charity fundraising events.

Before you start

To qualify as small, ticket sales for a single lottery must be worth no more than £20,000 and annual ticket sales must be worth no more than £250,000.

If your lottery exceeds either of these amounts, you'll need to apply for a licence from the Gambling Commission.

Annual return and fee

You must send us your annual returns form each year, stating the total value of the year's ticket sales and pay the annual fee.
