Sandgate Primary School PTA

Decision Maker: Ward Member for Sandgate and West Folkestone (2)

Decision status: Recommendations Approved

Is Key decision?: No

Is subject to call in?: No

Purpose:

Refurbishment of school cookery teaching facilities.

Decision:

To provide funding of £872.45 to the above project.

Reason for decision:

This project is aimed at improving the health and wellbeing of the children in the ward of Sandgate and West Folkestone.

Nearly one in 2 Year 6 pupils in England requires medical help for obesity. By the time children leave key stage two, one in three is overweight or obese, according to Government data. A dislike for cooking is associated with fast food consumption which in turn has been linked with increasing levels of obesity  (Dave, 2009). Learning cookery skills early in life has potential associations with health, cooking behaviours and food sustainability .

Sandgate Primary School wants all pupils to cook twice a term. The current ovens at the school are old, malfunctioning and do not have any facilities for hob cooking; we need new ovens and we require a sink that pupils can use to wash up etc. A room has been identified to kit out to the required standard. We are requesting funding for the ovens and sink and new. This project will be match funded by the school’s PTA.
