Purpose:

St Mary in the Marsh Project Fund - Part funding of the concrete base for the new village hall in St Mary in the Marsh

Decision:

To provide funding of £1500 to the above project.

Reason for decision

We have been trying to replace the old much used but delapidated church hall with a new community building for 20 years, we have taken a number of surveys

from the local people which prove the need for a meeting venue where people can meet regardless of religious, cultural, social backgrounds. We live in a

deprived rural part of the Romney Marsh with poor transport, high unemployment and an ageing population that need a venue to offer social, economic and

educational improvement to their lives. We have raised a substantial amount to provide a pavilion type building and now plan to raise the funds for the

groundworks and base to site the building. The village has become quite isolated from it's nearest neighbours who have these facilities with no bus service

operating to St Mary's Bay or Dymchurch, our nearest village halls and very limited bus service to either New Romney and Newchurch. The mobile library no

longer serves the village but in a hall we can start our own book lending service, lunch club and mobile post office. We have a number of clubs and societies who

have expressed an interest in using the venue one up and running including a dance school, keep fit, computer club, bereavement group and art group. It is

hoped we can start a community gardening group to look after the grounds with the older members of the community passing on skills to the youngsters.
