Westenhanger Castle will be the jewel in the crown of the Otterpool Park development

Folkestone & Hythe District Council announced today (22 August 2019) it has bought Westenhanger Castle.

The castle will be the centrepiece for Otterpool Park with a spectacular new park created around it for everyone to enjoy.

Westenhanger Castle is an important historical site in our district dating back to medieval times. The purchase by the council includes the castle, barns and 14 acres of surrounding parkland.

A new public park will be created around the castle. The park will have a lake, the water course will be improved and the moat will be refilled. The historic medieval barns will also be brought back into use. Evidence of a walled garden and former causeway have also been revealed.

Cllr David Monk, Leader of Folkestone & Hythe District Council said: "The council buying Westenhanger Castle is a real milestone in the development of Otterpool Park with the castle and the new park becoming the centrepiece for this aspirational development.

"It was already a superb development but now we have secured the purchase of the castle, Otterpool Park is even more special and this adds value in so many ways to the development. It will not only be a spectacular place for people who live there but also for those who live around it."

Currently the castle is a popular wedding venue, managed by Idyllic Events, who run other successful wedding businesses. The council has entered into a management agreement with them to manage the maintenance of the grounds and castle, at no extra cost to the council.

The council will use the castle for events associated with Otterpool Park which will showcase Otterpool Park and the district.
