Council's role

District councils are well placed in helping to improve the health and wellbeing of its residents.  We are keen to encourage everyone in the district to lead healthy lives.

Many social, environmental and economic factors impact on a person's health and wellbeing beyond the traditional health care and medical needs of the population including:

  • provision of adequate housing
  • good access to parks
  • gardens
  • open spaces and leisure facilities
  • supporting key services
  • working across partner organisations and agencies

District councils can help shape and support services that promote good health and wellbeing, prevent ill health and provide services that support the local community. In it's role as a planning authority the council has developed a chapter on health and wellbeing in its local plan which can be viewed here: Local Plan (PDF, 28.82MB). The Health and Wellbeing section can be found in Chapter 16, easily accessible from the hyperlinks found in the document's content page right at the start .
