Over half the homes in the district are at risk from flooding. Even if you don't live near the coast or a river, surface water flooding can happen after heavy rainfall when the drains can't cope.
Check if your home is at risk
You can check if your home is at risk from river, coastal or surface water flooding by checking the flood warning information service, or by phoning 0345 988 1188.
If you are at risk, sign up for GOV.UK's free flood warning service for alerts sent to you by phone, text or email.
Preparing for flooding
The Environment Agency offers a five point plan:
- make a flood plan
- improve your property's flood protection
- Get advice and guidance on insurance and assistance from FloodRe scheme (PDF,164KB) in finding insurance for householders affected by flooding
- get help during a flood
- get help after a flood
Sandbags are one of the most popular devices for keeping floodwater out of our homes.
We will provide empty sandbags to help people to prepare for flooding, and will only provide filled sandbags during a flooding emergency.
