Grand Burstin Hotel fire response

The latest information relating to the response following the Grand Burston Hotel fire on Saturday 19 September:

Pavilion Court

Residents who had to leave their homes following the fire are now able to return to their flats.

Ninety flats were evacuated after fears the blaze might have weakened the structure of the neighbouring Grand Burstin, potentially causing it to collapse.

The Grand Burstin’s structure has now been investigated. Experts agree the exclusion zone can be reduced, meaning all Pavilion Court residents can return.

Those in need of help and support can find a list of organisations able to provide food, clothing toiletries and other practical help on our website.

Diversions and local businesses

Vehicular access to all local businesses in Folkestone Harbour has been restored.

  • Lower Sandgate Road is operating under a temporary contraflow (two-way) traffic arrangement to allow access
  • Marine Terrace has three-phase traffic signals in place to provide an access route for residents and businesses operating on Folkestone Harbour Arm

A letter outlining the changes has been published by Kent County Council.

C1 parking permit holders can temporarily use the Tram Road car park while these restrictions are in place.

Community effort

Folkestone & Hythe District Council chief executive Susan Priest said: “Our emergency services, partners and council staff have been a real credit to themselves in what have been exceptionally difficult circumstances.

“My thanks go to hotel customers and Pavilion Court residents who have expressed their thanks and been truly touched by the generosity of my council colleagues and our community partners.”

Emergency services

At the height of the incident, Kent Fire and Rescue sent 26 fire engines and a height vehicle to the scene.

Crews wearing breathing apparatus worked exceptionally hard to extinguish the fire while facing intense heat and we are incredibly grateful for their tireless efforts.

Kent Police is carrying out enquiries to establish the cause of the fire.
