Disabled motorists using the Sandgate Road Car Park can now register their vehicle for a quicker exit.

Blue badge holders, eligible for three hours free parking, are being encouraged to register and upload a copy of their document onto the council’s Autobill platform.

Once approved, blue badge holders will then be able to leave without the need to visit a parking terminal.

It is not compulsory – blue badge holders can continue to scan them before returning to their vehicle.

Sandgate Road Car Park is subject to a 12-month trial which sees Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras recording the exact time motorists arrive.

This means users who pay for parking are only charged for the duration actually required upon their return before heading towards the automatic barrier.

This can be done by paying at the machine or – if you want to skip any queue – using the Autobill service.

Signing up is easy, fast and secure – extra benefits include avoiding the need to scrabble around for loose change. Simply create an account and then add your vehicle and payment details.

If the trial is successful, it is intended the system will be rolled out to other car parks in the district.
