A consultation on Folkestone & Hythe District Council’s draft statement of principles relating to gambling is now open.

The document is reviewed every three years and sets out how activity is regulated at a local level, such as in betting shops and premises with gaming machines.

Its content is largely determined by the Gambling Act 2005 and guidance from the Gambling Commission and aims to:

  • Prevent gambling from being a source of crime or disorder; being associated with crime or disorder or being used to support crime
  • Ensure gambling is conducted in a fair and open way
  • Protect children and other vulnerable persons from being harmed or exploited by gambling

Changes in the 2025 version include updated information from recent studies and the incorporation of guidance on gaming machines.

Online betting and associated websites are regulated directly by the Gambling Commission and, therefore, fall outside of the statement of principles’ scope.

Visit folkestone-hythe.gov.uk/consultations to read the draft and comment on it before 4pm on 11 August 2025. Printed versions can be made available on request by calling 01303 853000.

Feedback will be considered before the statement is presented to full council for approval and adoption.
