Members of a new community panel are being sought to help shape a new design code for the district and positively influence future development.

The code is a planning document setting out specific requirements for new development. Once approved, it will be used to help decide whether proposals for development are acceptable in design terms.

Folkestone & Hythe District Council wants the code to reflect local knowledge about character and preferences. These might include street design, building materials, energy efficiency measures, and approaches to parking and bin storage.

Those interested in becoming a member of the community panel can complete a brief online application form or email planning.policy@folkestone-hythe.gov.uk for more information. Printed versions can be made available on request by calling 01303 853000.

Panel members will be invited to attend an in-person workshop at a Folkestone location on the morning of Sunday 28 September 2025, with a second to follow in the afternoon of Saturday 29 November 2025.

Leader Cllr Jim Martin said: “This is an exciting opportunity to share your views about the place where you live and how you think new development could be designed to conserve or improve the district.

“We’re looking for residents from all backgrounds with an enthusiasm and interest in improving the quality of new buildings and places across the district.

“It won’t take up a lot of your time and you don’t need any specific skills for this role or any knowledge of the planning system.”

The deadline for applications is 3pm on Wednesday 27 August 2025.
