Folkestone will lend its hand in carrying the Baton of Hope as part of an initiative aiming to shine a light on suicide prevention.

The Olympic torch-styled symbol of hope will visit the town for a warm-up event on Sunday 21 September 2025 ahead of the official Kent and Medway leg of the national tour the following day (Monday 22 September).

The Baton of Hope works to raise awareness of suicide prevention organisations and charities who support people in times of need, including loneliness.

The baton will be relayed around the F51 skate park, which is operated by The Sports Trust — a local charity — before continuing along to the Folkestone Harbour Arm between 10am and midday on Sunday 21 September, which residents are welcome to attend and spectate.

Skateboarders and members of The Sports Trust team impacted by suicide and its effects will hold the baton as ambassadors, highlighting the importance of suicide prevention and awareness.

They will also demonstrate how active lifestyles can benefit both mental and physical wellbeing.

One of the co-founders of this Baton of Hope, Mike McCarthy will also be in attendance.

Folkestone Safe Haven, at 3 Rendezvous Street, will also host an event between 10am and 2pm on Monday 22 September focusing on wellbeing. There will be opportunities for residents to meet professionals and to seek advice.

Cllr Mike Blakemore, Cabinet Member for Community and Collaboration, said: “I am proud Folkestone is playing a part in welcoming this inspirational campaign to the area before it embarks on its main tour across the rest of the county.

“At the heart of the Baton of Hope initiative is reminding people of the support available when they feel they have no one to turn to. Days like this shine a light on the fact that help is always available, and with it hope."
