Calls for new climate change legislation have been backed by Folkestone & Hythe District Council.
Campaign group Zero Hour wants the Climate and Nature Bill to be enacted by central government – a move which would address “the full extent of the climate and nature crisis” in line with the most up-to-date science.
Actions within the proposal include ensuring the UK’s greenhouse gas reduction commitments are met and an obligation to reversing biodiversity loss by 2030.
Folkestone & Hythe District Council is the latest to show its support for the project, joining almost 400 other local authorities and nearly 200 MPs already signed up.
Cllr Stephen Scoffham – Cabinet Member for Climate, Environment and Biodiversity, – said: “Experts know we urgently need to protect our natural environment and safeguard future generations. It’s important, especially now, to listen to the science.
“The bill has provision to halt wildlife decline and enforce the government to develop a meaningful strategy that gives us all the best chance to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. It’s only right to support the Zero Hour campaign.”
