A new cohort of local school students were welcomed to help shape the district’s future in the council’s latest meeting.
The group – now in its third iteration – gives young people the opportunity to involve themselves in the democratic process and share their own priorities for the area.
Meeting at the Civic Centre in Folkestone, a total of 49 pupils from Brockhill Park School, Folkestone School for Girls, The Harvey Grammar School, Folkestone Academy, Turner Free School, Lighthouse on the Marsh, The Marsh Academy and The Beacon attended.
They contributed their views on outdoor sports and recreation facilities – identifying opportunities to enhance parks, play areas and spaces for teenagers.
Discussions around future employment, led by guest speaker Brigette Orasinski from Strange Cargo, explored the skills young people feel they need to succeed and the challenges and opportunities presented by emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence.
Cllr Mike Blakemore, Cabinet Member for Community and Collaboration, said: “The youth forum is a fantastic opportunity for our young people to engage with their area in a more profound way, by speaking directly to those responsible for its running.
“We welcomed our biggest group of students yet and are excited to hear the ideas, thoughts and conversations we’re set to have again in the coming months.
“Thank you to all the schools for recognising the value of the Youth Forum and making it possible for their students to take part.”
Participants also shared comments on longer-term plans for the district as part of consultations around the next Local Plan. These focused on what communities could look like in the future and how local places can be made more welcoming, sustainable and attractive for residents and visitors alike.
The youth forum is for those aged 13-19 and meets twice per academic year. The next event is due to take place in March 2027.
