Medical exemption application for licensed taxi drivers

Under the Equality Act 2010, licensed taxi and private hire drivers may apply for a medical exemption where a medical condition prevents them from carrying out certain duties to assist disabled passengers.

The two exemptions available are:

  • Wheelchair Assistance Exemption – for drivers who are unable, on medical grounds, for example an injury or pre-existing condition, to provide physical assistance to wheelchair users or people with physical disabilities, as required by Section 165 of the Equality Act 2010.
  • Assistance Dog Exemption – for drivers who are unable, on medical grounds, for example allergies, to carry assistance dogs accompanying passengers, as required by Sections 168 and 170 of the Equality Act 2010.

Drivers wishing to apply for either exemption should contact the Licensing Team to request an application form. Please email licensing@folkestone-hythe.gov.uk.

Applicants will be required to provide supporting medical evidence from a medical practitioner before any exemption can be considered.
