Taxi - driver assessment course

Why is there a driver assessment course for taxi licensing?

Before being granted a taxi or private hire driver licence, applicants are usually required to complete a driver assessment course. This course ensures that drivers meet the necessary standards to provide a safe, professional, and comfortable service to passengers.

The course typically includes:

  • Vehicle safety check – Ensuring your vehicle is roadworthy and properly maintained.
  • Licence and eyesight check – Verifying your eligibility and ability to drive safely.
  • One-to-one driving assessment – Conducted by a qualified instructor to evaluate your driving skills.
  • Passenger safety and comfort – Assessing how well you consider the needs of passengers.
  • Safe manoeuvring and control – Demonstrating your ability to handle the vehicle confidently.
  • Knowledge of road safety and driving principles – Including awareness, anticipation, and planning.
  • Taxi-specific scenarios – Such as picking up and dropping off passengers safely, and answering questions about vehicle safety and passenger care

Some assessments may also include:

  • Wheelchair accessibility tests (if applicable)
  • Emergency stop exercises
  • Independent driving segments
  • Basic Highway Code questions

This assessment helps ensure that licensed drivers:

  • Are competent and confident behind the wheel
  • Understand their responsibilities to passengers and the public
  • Can operate safely in varied traffic and environmental conditions
