Taxi - medical check

Why is there medical check for taxi licensing?

This check confirms that the driver is physically and mentally fit to drive professionally.

Taxi drivers often work long hours, drive in challenging conditions, and transport vulnerable passengers. The medical check ensures drivers meet the DVLA Group 2 medical standards, which are the same standards required for bus and lorry drivers.

A qualified doctor will assess several key areas of your health:

  • Vision test - You must be able to read a number plate from 20 metres and meet specific visual acuity standards (with corrective lenses if needed).
  • Blood pressure check - Ensures your blood pressure is within safe limits.
  • Cardiovascular health - Screening for heart conditions or history of stroke.
  • Diabetes screening - Especially important if you use insulin; stable blood sugar control is required.
  • Neurological assessment - Checks for conditions like epilepsy or anything affecting alertness or motor function.
  • Mental health review - Ensures you are mentally fit to drive safely.
  • Medication & medical history review - Evaluates any ongoing treatments or conditions that could affect driving.

When Is the medical required?

  • When applying for a taxi or private hire licence for the first time
  • Age up to 45 – every 6 years
  • Age 45 to 65 – every 3 years
  • Age 65 and over – every year

Who can carry out the medical?

  • Your own GP or a doctor with access to your medical records
  • Approved medical providers

Important notes

  • Drivers with certain conditions (e.g. diabetes treated with insulin, history of stroke) may need additional evidence or tests.
  • Always check with your local licensing authority for specific requirements, as they may vary.
