Why Is safeguarding training important?

This training helps ensure that drivers understand their role in protecting children and vulnerable adults from harm, abuse, and exploitation.

Taxi and private hire drivers often work alone and interact with a wide range of passengers, including those who may be at risk. Drivers are in a unique position to spot early signs of abuse or neglect and take appropriate action. The course equips them with the knowledge and confidence to:

  • Respond appropriately to safeguarding concerns
  • Report issues to the relevant authorities

Who needs to take it?

  • All new applicants for taxi or private hire licences
  • Existing drivers renewing their licence – if required by the council you are licensed with.

People working in the taxi trade may have a role to play in spotting and reporting the abuse, exploitation or neglect of children or vulnerable adults. However, this is only possible if they are aware of and alert to the signs of abuse and who they should contact if they suspect a child or vulnerable adult is at risk of harm or in immediate danger. Drivers – 2.9.1

Therefore, the Department for Transport expect local authorities to require Hackney Carriage and Private Hire drivers to undertake appropriate safeguarding awareness training. Drivers – 2.9.2.
