The Elections Act received Royal Assent in April 2022, find out what this means for voting in the future
The UK Government has passed major changes to the electoral system in the UK. They believe it will allow greater protections for voters against fraud, more support for disabled people at the polling booth and measures to prevent intimidation at the ballot box.
The Act will be introduced in to the world of elections over the next few years, with changes coming as soon as May 2023.
In summary the Act includes:
- Voter ID at polling stations. From 04 May 2023, electors at the polling station will need to show an accepted form of photographic id to prove their identity before being issued with a ballot paper
- Changes to postal voting
- Changes to proxy voting
- Improving the accessibility of elections. From 04 May 2023, improvements will be made to elections to help with accessibility
- Preventing undue influence
- Changes for EU Citizens
- Changes to overseas voting
- Changes to the Police and Crime Commissioner voting system
