Folkestone & Hythe District Council is responsible for cutting grass within the district’s parks, open spaces, play areas, communal housing areas, sports grounds, cemeteries and closed churchyards. We are also responsible for managing 7 km of the Royal Military Canal.
Sports Grounds - The Stadium (Church Road Cheriton), North Road (Folkestone), Morehall Recreation Ground, Cheriton Road Sports Ground and East Cliff sports facilities.
Cemeteries - Hawkinge, Cheriton Road, Spring Lane, Lydd, New Romney and Brenzett
Closed Churchyards - The Bayle, St Martins, St Leonards, Dymchurch, Brenzett, Brookland, New Romney and Lydd
Grass cutting is done frequently during the peak growing season (March to October) in order to keep the parks, four of which have the prestigious Green Flag award, looking good.
There are areas where grass cutting is reduced to encourage pollinators and where rare plants are grown e.g. pyramidal orchid. These areas include Kingsnorth Gardens, Radnor Park, Hawkinge Cemetery, Spring Lane Cemetery, Cheriton Road Cemetery, Lower Leas Coastal Park, Cheriton Rec, Morehall Rec, East Cliff, Royal Military Canal, Payers Park.
Town and Parish Councils are responsible for the majority of their own grounds maintenance.
Tree Maintenance
We are responsible for maintaining the district’s tree stock across all of our parks, open spaces, play areas, communal housing areas, sports grounds, cemeteries and closed churchyards and along the Royal Military Canal.
We undertake tree planting each year to improve the cover provided by trees across the district.
For more information about tree planting including where to report problems view our Report a tree problem page.
Road and highway verges
Kent County Council, as the highways authority, cuts the grass and removes any weeds on the majority of roadside verges and traffic islands in the district.
Find more information about how KCC maintain the verges and the frequency of cutting.
If overgrown grass is causing visibility issues for road users report it to KCC online.
Weed spraying is undertaken by a third-party contractor for KCC Highways.
