A project to transform a brownfield site in Folkestone into a high-quality, housing-led development has received a £2.5m boost from central government.
The successful application for Brownfield Land Release Fund money will go towards the remediation of the former Ship Street gasworks required to enable the construction of up to 150 homes.
Having been derelict for more than 60 years, the project seeks to open up the site by providing energy-efficient and sustainable properties at a density consistent with its surroundings.
New public spaces including a green link between Folkestone Central railway station and Folkestone Harbour, as well as a small (pocket) park on Foord Road for the community to enjoy, will also be included in the plans.
An experienced professional team of designers, engineers and sustainability experts at Arup and Fletcher Priest Architects were appointed to work on the master design work for the site at the end of last year.

“To receive such significant backing is testament to the commitment we’ve shown in bringing this site forward for development in such a key location, despite its many challenges.”
Folkestone & Hythe District Council purchased the former gasworks in 2021 with the vision of enabling the site to be brought forward for development as part of its strategic regeneration plans for Folkestone and the wider district.
A number of public engagement events focusing on its future have been held in recent years. Work, including the exploration of different delivery options, is ongoing and a planning application is due to be submitted in the autumn.
The Brownfield Land Release Fund supports local authorities to bring brownfield sites facing viability challenges forward for housing development.

“This is all part of our long-term plan for housing – making sure we deliver the homes we need across the country.”
