15/07/2018 - End of World War 1 Commemoration Committee (Hythe) ref: 1814    Recommendations Approved

Renovation and improvement of the Hythe War Memorial.  The Hythe War Memorial commemorates the First and Second World Wars and is a centre for remembrance in the town.  The monument is stained and needs professional cleaning.  The area in front of the memorial also needs refurbishment.  The intention is to resurface the oval area within the curtilage with a large poppy design inlaid to a resin bonded surface together with refurbishment of the existing benches and cleaning the marble and brickwork.  This will create a suitable and inspirational, permanent visual enhancement of the Memorial of all those former residents of Hythe, both military and civilian, who made the supreme sacrifice.

Prior to or on Remembrance Sunday 2018 the intention is to have a Service of Dedication and produce a Commemorative Programme.

19/07/2018 - The Apollos Trust ref: 1795    Recommendations Approved

Apollos Trust Community Café.  This idea was formed from the discussion with people about Young people being socially isolated and needing support to gain skills for employment or further education. A café is a great place for people to socialise, and as such, we want it to benefit the local community as well as the Young People. We will be inviting local residents and local groups (like AGE UK) to attend. The Young People will benefit from skills in catering, food hygiene, and customer service and be able to put it all on a CV as well as adding volunteering to their list of accomplishments. For this Café, it will be the first and a trial.

If successful we hope to do it each school holiday in the next academic year. We will be working with Young People from The Marsh Academy who live in the Cheriton and Folkestone areas.

Decision Maker: Ward Member for Cheriton (2)

Decision published: 09/08/2018

Effective from: 19/07/2018

Decision:

To provide funding of £100 to the above project.

Reason for decision:

The Apollos Trust trustees are in support of this project as well as local churches and the school itself.  Young people have limited opportunities to expand their skill base.  Many youth provisions are closed and schools can only manage so much in training opportunities.  There are also needs for community cohesion.  We want this to be inclusive to all.

23/05/2018 - Strange Cargo ref: 1779    Recommendations Approved

Charivari Day 2018 –

Charivari Day Carnival is a significant community event that actively engages around 600 local children and adults in creating costumes for a colourful, musical parade through Folkestone on 7 July. The event involves many weeks of preparation making costumes, which is facilitated by Strange Cargo. Local primary schools take part in a teachers masterclass and there are sessions with older secondary school students to learn about design and making techniques to create spectacular carnival costumes. There are public workshops and artist training opportunities.  The free event attracts a very large audience from across the district and a major community event for local people.

2018 is the 22nd Charivari Day and this year’s theme is 60 years of Rock and Roll. The event is an inclusive community carnival that has been taking place annually in Folkestone since 97.  Primary School children will make many 100’s of costumes in school, following inset training for teachers, who take a kit of materials back to their students to prepare for the event. Secondary school students come to Strange Cargo’s base in Cheriton where they will learn a wealth of valuable skills including costume design, how to build big structures, team working, use of hand tools and working with new materials.  They then take part in the spectacular carnival event, where they have the opportunity to show off their work and enjoy taking credit for making beautiful and extraordinary carnival costumes in front of thousands of people from the Folkestone community.

DECISION:

To provide funding of £500 to the above project.

Reason for decision:

Requests to remove graffiti are being received every week from residents and ward councillors. Graffiti has become more prevalent in the town  in recent months which causes the visual amenity of the town to be spoilt. There is also a causal link between graffiti and other types of antisocial behaviour. The appearance of graffiti drags an area down and encourages other street crimes such as drug dealing and prostitution. Tools are being purchased for clearing of pathways that have become overgrown.

Sunny Sands Sandcastle Competition –

This will be the 11th year we have hosted the Sunnysands Sandcastle competition. This year we have had to pay for the use of the beach and an increase in liability insurance – without a grant we would not be able to afford to host it.  We believe it is an event that promotes the Folkestone Beach and the spirit of a Folkestone Summer Season.

DECISION:

To provide funding of £250 to the above project.

Reason for decision:

This is our 11th year. If it had not been well attended, competitors and bystanders, we would not have continued. We have had visitors last year from London who saw it on social media and ‘made a day of it’.  We have families returning year after year. We know pubs and restaurants are bursting at the seam during the festival.  We are sometimes approached by past participants who want to know the date of this years competition.
