Checks carried out by the Council

Before your licence is issued the council will carry out the following checks:

1. Ten year residency check

A ten year residency check is used to confirm whether an individual has lived in the UK lawfully and continuously for a full ten years.

2.  ‘Fit & proper’ or ‘Safe & suitable’ person

Before someone can be granted a taxi or private hire driver licence, the licensing authority must be satisfied that the applicant is a fit and proper person. This is designed to protect the public, especially children and vulnerable adults, by ensuring that only trustworthy and responsible individuals are licensed to drive passengers.

3. NR3 check

This is an additional check carried out regarding anything that needs to be taken into consideration when processing an application to be a Private Hire or Dual Driver (Hackney) licence holder.
